The Mentoring Manifesto, Vol. 62: Understanding and Embracing Our True Identity
The movie Catch Me If You Can depicts the life story of prolific con-man Frank Abagnale, who by age 19 conned his way to a small fortune posing as a hospital physician, a state prosecutor, and a Pan-Am pilot.
As the movie progresses, Abagnale’s cons grow bolder, and his web of lies grows deeper. By the end, he’s visibly exhausted from the emotional and physical strain of keeping up with his various identities.
Like Abagnale, most mentees arrive at their mentor’s homes tired from chasing what the world has to offer. Many are lonely and isolated, struggling to manage the multiple roles they play as father, son, businessman, coworker, or friend. Some have become a shell of the man God calls them to be.
While this identity crisis is real, it does not reflect their true identity in the eyes of their Heavenly Father. Scripture reminds us that God sees them as His adopted sons (Romans 8:15), saints (1 Corinthians 1:2), and heirs (Galatians 4:7).
Mentors, you have the opportunity to speak this truth into the lives of your mentees, to remind them of their true identity before they end up like Frank Abagnale, burnt out, exhausted, and afraid. It starts with your story and how God has worked in your life.
The resources below will help you and mentees understand who God says you are and why that matters.
