My Theology in One Song
Almost every day, I listen to David Crowder sing “Here’s My Heart.” I always tear up. A couple years ago, I was on the beach at sunrise singing this song at the top of my lungs when I looked up and saw the shape of a heart in the clouds. More tears. One day last week, I was again on the beach at sunrise, listening to that song. And as it ended, it struck me . . . everything about my life . . . my beliefs, my history, my hope is found in this song. So I decided to ‘exegete’ the lyrics. Please click the video below and take a few minutes to watch and listen as Crowder sings the song at the Passion Conference. Then read my explanation as to why this song means so much to me.
Here goes . . .
Here’s my heart Lord
Speak what is true
“I bring my heart . . . my desires to you, Lord. Speak what is true . . . right now.”
I am found, I am yours
I am loved, I’m made pure
I have life, I can breathe
I am healed, I am free
“Lord, You pursued me and you found me. You loved me. You forgave me. Now I belong to you. I have life because of you. On top of healing my soul, you healed my body . . . You gave me a new lung; now I can breathe . . . (literally!) I’m set free!”
You are strong, You are sure
You are life, You endure
You are good, always true
You are light, breaking through
“I can rest because You are strong, You are sure, You are life, You endure. You are good, You’re always true. No matter what I face, if I keep looking in your direction, just like the rising sun, you’ll always break through. You are always there with me and for me!”
Here’s my life Lord
Speak what is true
“Not only do I present you my heart; I present you my life, Lord! I give you everything all over again!”
You are more than enough
You are here, you are love
“I realize I don’t need answers. You don’t have to speak. You are more than enough. And you’re here. You are Lord and You’re right here with me!”
You are hope, You are grace
You’re all I have, You’re everything
“You, oh God, are my hope! You are grace . . . I don’t deserve you, yet you give Yourself to me! You’re all I have, and because you’re all I have, you’re all I want. You’re the answer to all my unanswerable questions. I rest in You without all the answers. You’re my counselor, my mentor, my advocate, my confidant, my satisfier, my source of peace, my perfect Father, my best friend. You’re everything.”
Speak what is true.
“Jesus says, ‘I am’ . . . what is true, and that is all you need to know.”
