The Mentoring Manifesto, Vol. 26: “Bad Mentee Behavior” and the Covenant Commitment
The covenant commitment is a crucial element of Radical Mentoring. Growth happens because of the consistency and commitment of the group. At the beginning of the mentoring season, your guys agree to abide by the high standards laid out in the covenant they sign.
Radical Mentoring isn’t about breadth; it’s about depth. It’s not about how many we can mentor; it’s about taking the ones we can mentor deep into the faith. So, it’s okay if someone can’t make this covenant. You can’t impose accountability; you can only invite it. The covenant serves as the invitation and the acceptance of your group’s mutual commitment and the accountability it requires.
Most guys who opt-in to a group like this enjoy the challenge. They appreciate high standards and are more than willing to rise to meet them. But occasionally someone in your group will forget to do their homework or arrive late or have to miss a meeting. When that happens, your goal is to be a velvet hammer…don’t be shaming or be legalistic, but remind them of the covenant, ask them to live up to their commitment, and love them through it.
