Why Relationships Through Mentoring Groups Lead to Real Change
I met one of my closest friends through a company where we both worked. We started our roles around the same time, so it was easy to bond over being the new girls and figuring out a new organizational culture together.
But what made us truly connect wasn’t our jobs. It was the moments when we started sharing about our days and, eventually, about our lives. Somewhere along the way, we began opening up and being vulnerable with each other.
What started as jokes and small talk became lunch and coffee dates, long texts, voice messages, and prayer requests. We no longer work together, but we have stayed close because of the relationship we built. And I think there’s something important in that.
We can live in a neighborhood and barely know the people who live nearby. We can go to work, do our jobs, and leave without really connecting with anyone. We can even attend church every Sunday and miss the opportunity to build meaningful community within it.
But relationships make our lives fuller. They give us people to celebrate with, lean on, learn from, pray with, and grow alongside.
And at Radical Mentoring, we believe relationships are also one of the most powerful paths to real change.
Building relationships through mentoring
One question we hear often is “how is Radical Mentoring different from a Bible study?” A big part of the answer is the relationships that are built along the way.
It’s not that relationships can’t be formed through a Bible study. They absolutely can. But the Radical Mentoring journey intentionally curates deeper relationships through mentoring, with opportunities to connect, woven throughout the entire journey.
Mentors lead with vulnerability
Mentors set the tone by going first. They share their stories and are willing to be vulnerable about who they are, where they come from, and the experiences that have shaped them, both the good and the hard.
They are also intentional about connecting with their mentees one-on-one outside of monthly group meetings. Over time, that vulnerability and consistency helps create the trust that allows others to open up too.
The Story Retreat
The Story Retreat is a foundational part of the Radical Mentoring journey. The group gets away together for a weekend, and each person has the opportunity to share their unvarnished story.
They open up about what has shaped them, what has hurt, what has been hard, and sometimes even things they have never shared with anyone before. At Radical Mentoring, we call this B3: Be truthful (through your story) to Be known so you can Belong.
There is something powerful about being fully known and realizing you are fully accepted which leads to a sense of belonging.
Growth partners
It would be easy to settle for meeting once a month as a group and then going your separate ways. Growth partners help make sure the relationships continue beyond those meetings.
Mentees intentionally connect with one another throughout the month. Each topic includes questions they can talk through during their time together, whether that looks like sharing a meal, grabbing coffee, doing an activity, or simply talking on the phone.
The point is not how they meet. The point is that they keep showing up for one another.
Relationships create space for change
All of these pieces work together to create an environment where people can feel safe, seen, known, and connected leading to a sense of belonging.
Real change rarely happens when we keep everything to ourselves. It happens when we have people who know the real version of us, who ask the harder questions, who pray with us, encourage us, challenge us, and remind us of what is true.
The resources and monthly topics matter. The conversations matter. But relationships are what gives those things a place to take root.
That’s why relationships aren’t just something that happens along the way in Radical Mentoring. It’s an intentional part of how people grow.
Who in your life truly knows you, and are you making space to truly know them too?
